Albert Maverick was born in San Antonio, Texas, on 1854 May 8, the youngest surviving child of Samuel Augustus Maverick (1803-1870), a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, and Mary Ann Adams (1818-1898). Albert attended but was expelled from the Texas Military Institute in Bastrop and later attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where he met his future wife, Jane Lewis Maury (1858-1954).
